    The cause of melasma

A common problem in Thai people caused by abnormal subcutaneous pigment, the treatment can not cure it and there’s a chance to recur. How to lighten melasma and make recurrence more difficult?

Let’s understand the simple causes of melisma to prevent melisma from become darker.

    1. Hormonal melasma, when the hormone estrogen is too high such as from birth control pill or during pregnancy. This makes melanocytes in dermal layer unevenly produce melanin for skin. It thus stimulates abnormal pigmentation causing melasma or urging darker spot. But do not worry, because if the balance is right, the melasma is likely to fade and disappear.
    2. Sun melasma is a very common problem in Thai people or Asians who live abroad. We may expose to sunlight without awareness because of cool weather, the sunlight contains UV-B and UV-A. Unfortunately, Thai people and Asians have urged melasma more than whites. There is no adequate protection of sunlight especially during 10.00 - 14.00.
    3. Cosmetic melasma, since cosmetics such as speed whitening cream, chemicals, preservative or mercury, lead, may contain substances that stimulate melasma easily. It is evident that the skin becomes smoother since the first application. In a long –term period, facial skin will become sensitive and get worse after stop using. Finally, there will be incurable melisma and capillaries that cause rosacea.Problems that doctor want to fix is the use of cosmetics or facial whitening substance because this kind of melasma treatment is the most difficult and long-lasting.Hormonal melasma and sun melasma has a chance to disappear or fade until almost invisible with less chance of recurrence. But cosmetic melasma is difficult to be treated and takes time.
    4. Dark melasma from laser, since the laser has a chance to make some kind of melasma darker after discontinue. It’s similar to cosmetic melisma which fades in the early stage and after that becomes darker. This type of melasma is extremely difficult to treat compared to hormonal melasma and sun melasma. It’s better to research for more information.
    5.  Melasma from stress, when we work hard and do not have enough rest, there will be hormones from the pituitary gland that darken the melasma. Facial skin looks darker causing imbalance hormone.

Melasma treatment needs to see overall composition, so that the melasma is faded or disappeared in long term and prevent recurrence.

Surficial melasma on the epidermis is easier to be treated than melasma deep in subcutaneous layer but the mixed type is more difficult to treat, and recur easily. This requires a holistic treatment.

Therefore, melasma care should be holistic; using laser, cosmetic and body balance. The primary treatment that provides a good result is laser therapy but you have to choose one that suits melasma to prevent recurrence

All this is to understand and prevent recurrence …. Early treatment of melasma not as difficult as you think.
